Twenty-five Year 9 students explored pathways into healthcare at a hands-on Emergency Skills Career Taster Program at Edith Cowan University (ECU) South West on 22 October.
Delivered in collaboration between the University Department of Rural Health South West (UDRH SW), Future Student Engagements at ECU South West and South Regional TAFE (Bunbury), the event encouraged students to explore their interests and connect education with future career opportunities.
UDRH SW Paramedic Discipline Advisor Wayne Goodrem and Lecturer Ari Aldus facilitated practical workshops, introducing students to clinical skills used in paramedicine. Students had the opportunity to learn about measuring the Glasgow Coma Scale, taking temperatures, measuring blood pressure and performing auscultation.
Students also attended ECU’s Big Thinkers Like You workshop, hearing from a paramedic Student Ambassador, Arteman Hosseini, about his experience choosing a university course and navigating university life, including his timetable.
Career Taster Programs encourage students to be curious about their future and discover the range of pathways available after school. By combining practical activities with insights from current university students, the program helped make healthcare careers more accessible and familiar.
The events are part of ongoing efforts to inspire the next generation of healthcare professionals and support a sustainable health workforce in the South West.
Two further Career Taster events are planned, focusing on teaching and science, giving more students the opportunity to explore potential career pathways.
