As part of the Children’s University program, University Department of Rural Health South West (UDRH SW) recently hosted the engaging ‘Hands-on Health Heroes’ workshop, delivered by Wayne Goodrem (Paramedicine Discipline Advisor) and Fiona Black (Nursing Discipline Advisor). This fun and interactive session gave children an introduction to essential first aid and emergency response skills delivered by trained practitioners.

Participants learned how to assess and respond to an emergency using the DRSABC (Danger, Response, Send for Help, Airway, Breathing, CPR)  approach, practiced calling 000, and discovered how to correctly bandage a snake bite. Children also enjoyed dressing up in personal protective equipment (PPE) and putting their family members in the recovery position, reinforcing life-saving skills through practical, hands-on activities.

A highlight of the workshop was a visit from David King of Kingston First Response, who gave an exciting look inside an ambulance and shared insights into the vital work of paramedics and healthcare professionals.

The workshop was a hit with both children and families, who loved the opportunity to learn valuable skills in a fun, supportive environment, ultimately inspiring the next generation of health care heroes in the South West.
