Hands-on. Real world. Your first steps into healthcare careers.
Do you have a child interested in nursing, allied health or health promotion and looking for something to do during the July school holidays?
Register your year 10, 11 or 12 child for a day of interactive activities, learning and fun on the ECU South West campus! This day features a healthcare simulation and health promotion, nutrition and occupational health and safety activities.
Healthcare Simulation: An Immersive Learning Experience
Facilitated by the University Department of Rural Health South West, students will move through a simulation of Alex, who has sustained a head injury playing basketball, while exploring the ECU South West campus:
- Paramedicine: Learn the skills of a first responder in first assessment, see what the inside of an ambulance really looks like and practice wheeling a gurney.
- Nursing: In the ECU South West state-of-the-art nursing simulation wards, see how a nurse assesses Alex for clinical deterioration. Learn how to take neuro observations and chart them in real world health charts.
- Occupational Therapy: Assess Alex’s memory post-concussion to check for any short term changes. Learn how OTs help support people return to activity and learning after a head injury.
- Speech Pathology: See the variety of non-verbal communication skills that can be taught by Speech Pathologist to assist those who can not talk. Have a go at using Augmentative and Alternative Communication.
- Multidisciplinary Team: Reflect on how nursing and Allied Health professionals work as a team to ensure a smooth healthcare process for Alex.
Health Promotion & Activities
Students will also engage with activities delivered by School of Medical and Health Science academics and staff:
- Reframe: Building Positive Body Image in a Filtered World: Step behind the screen and discover how Health Promotion practitioners tackle the impact of social media on body image. In this interactive workshop, you’ll unpack how online content shapes self‑perception, explore real strategies used in health promotion campaigns, and get a taste of what a future career in Health Promotion could look like—creating healthier, more confident communities both online and offline.
- Behind the Label: Understanding Alcohol & Health Promotion: This interactive workshop explores how Health Promotion plays a key role in reducing alcohol‑related harm across communities. Using a real-world case study, we will examine how factors such as alcohol availability, licensing, venue practices, promotions, community education, and local policy shape drinking behaviours and outcomes. Through a multi‑perspective approach, you will gain insight into how Health Promotion practitioners work with governments, venues, and communities to create safer, healthier environments.
- Workplace Inspection: Step into the role of a safety professional as you spot hazards, learn how risks are managed and discover careers in Occupational health and Safety with an ECU alumni.
- Nutrition activity: Explore how food and drinks – including caffeine – affect the body, examine why people make the nutrition choices they do and discover career pathways in nutrition, with a qualified nutritionist.
Please note registration is for the full day only.
