Building Collaborative Research in the South West

On Wednesday 23 October 2025, the first Research Skills Workshop- Participatory Research Methods for Health & Community Services brought together 18 participants from across the South West for an interactive and collaborative session exploring Participatory Action Research (PAR).

Facilitated by Dr Adam Johnson, the workshop attracted a diverse group from experienced researchers to those who support research through executive and community-facing roles. While not everyone entered the space with formal research experience, all shared a curiosity about how to engage communities more meaningfully in research practice.

The session combined presentation, discussion, and open forum learning, encouraging participants to share their experiences and perspectives. The group examined what distinguishes Participatory Action Research from traditional academic approaches, unpacking how community consultation, engagement, and co-design form the backbone of genuine, impactful research.

Adam highlighted the importance of authentic participation, ensuring that action is not performative but woven into every stage of the process. Through case studies like the City of Bunbury MARCIA Study, participants explored how PAR connects lived experience with outcomes that matter locally.

After a short break, the group worked through a framework for actionable research, linking ideas and outcomes through personal and community experience. Attendees were encouraged to reflect on how PAR can challenge existing assumptions and invite researchers to adapt and grow alongside their communities.

Participants left with an actionable framework, helping them embed participatory approaches into ongoing and future projects.
