Yarning, Collaboration and Career Pathways: Supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander High School Students

Authored: Associate Professor Beverley Ewens + Professor Beth Armstrong

Staff from ECU’s School of Nursing & Midwifery and the UDRH SW recently met and yarned with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community members on the ECU South West campus.

This was the second event which brought community members from South West health services, the education department, South West Regional TAFE, Follow the Dream and Rangers’ services, together to collaborate on the planning and development of an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander student camp for students in years 9-10. This will be a three day residential camp on the ECU South West campus and where students will be introduced to careers in nursing and midwifery, take part in simulation activities, visit healthcare facilities and enjoy lots of fun activities on and around the campus.

This is the first camp of its kind in the School, and it is hoped that students who attend will develop an interest in joining the School in the future and ultimately our professions. UDRH SW is proud to be supporting this important initiative.
