Engaging with Healthcare Students Through Dotmocracies

Our ‘Dotmocracies’ went on tour last month!

From the ECU South West campus to the Joondalup ECU Campus, our team took the Dotmocracy to multiple O’Week, Education and Guild events to see what students think would support them on clinical placement in the South West.

What is a Dotmocracy? It’s a simple, interactive voting system using stickers. By participating, students tell us exactly what they need as they prepare for clinical placements this year.

We found that future and current healthcare professionals are most interested in:
– Financial support on placement
– Flexibility to balance family or personal responsibilities
– Affordable or free accommodation on placement
– Mentorship from local health professionals

We gathered differing opinions from Perth and metro-based students, first-year students, established university students plus staff and graduates based in the South West. Being able to differentiate between these demographics is helping us create bespoke experiences for our target audiences based on the supports they perceive their needs on placement.

These findings will help shape the way we communicate the benefits of our offering, develop new support systems and further enhance the student placement experience.

Engaging directly with potential students at these events across universities has been a valuable step in educating them about the fantastic career and placement opportunities available in the South West!
