Stroke Conversations in the South West

Professor Beth Armstrong (UDRH SW), Professor Martin Jones (ECU) and WACHS South West Stroke Coordinator Renee Dehring conducted a successful community research consultation surrounding stroke in Busselton in November.

There were 24 attendees, including both people who have experienced stroke along with family and carers.  Attendees heard about the latest research in the management of stroke, engaged in discussions about concerns and challenges that they face as part of their lived experience of stroke and planned potential ways forward in meaningful South West based research.

Participants enjoyed and benefitted from the day through learning some new facts about stroke, having their concerns acknowledged and connecting with a community of people living with stroke in the South West. Attendees expressed interest in participating in projects and contributing to further efforts to improve support for stroke survivors and their families. They were also keen to explore how students on clinical placement supported by the UDRH SW in the region could facilitate activities including therapy, support group planning and two way learning opportunities where students can gain insights directly from people with lived experience.

Professor Beth Armstrong Noted:

Lots of needs identified, research opportunities discussed and commitment to more conversations to work out ways forward. Social connections an important feature. An inspiring day!

Looking ahead, further sessions are planned for 2026 to continue learning from and supporting those affected by Stroke in South West Australia.
