UDRH SW Delivers Essential Training to Clinical Placement Supervisors: Teaching on the Run

In mid-July, ten health professionals from the South West region of Western Australia attended two days of Teaching on the Run (ToTR) workshops. The participants came from a range of workplaces and disciplines, including WACHS, aged care, disability services, and private practice, and represented professions such as nursing, midwifery, physiotherapy, pharmacy, speech pathology, dietetics, occupational therapy, and podiatry. All participants were keen to enhance their skills in supervising students on clinical placements to help invigorate the health workforce in the region.

The workshops were facilitated by Senior Lecturer Abigail Lewis from the University Department of Rural Health South West (UDRH SW) and covered a wide range of topics to strengthen supervision capabilities. Key areas of education included planning learning, clinical teaching, and assessment fundamentals. Participants developed these skills in a collaborative, interactive, and interdisciplinary setting, through role plays and group activities.

The sessions sparked lively discussions around real-world challenges in clinical supervision, such as managing underperforming students, providing effective feedback, and navigating difficult conversations.

If you’d like to get involved with the Teaching on the Run program, UDRH SW runs sessions throughout the year both online and in-person in the South West Region. If you’d like to develop your clinical placement supervision skills and help shape the health workforce in the region, you can find more information and book your place here.
